Hudson Valley Credit Union is currently recruiting for the position of Real Estate Underwriter II. Primary Function: The Underwriter II reviews and underwrites conventional and government real estate mortgage loans in accordance with HVCU, FNMA, FHLMC, FHA, VA, USDA and secondary market investor guidelines, ensuring compliance with established Credit Union policies, department procedures, lending regulations, state and federal laws. This position will disposition loans within Credit Union issued loan approval authority limits, and clear conditions to expedite loan closings.


We are currently offering a $2,500 SIGN ON BONUS!!  New employees filling this role will receive their bonus in two installments: $1,250 after 60 days of employment and another $1,250 after 120 days of employment.


Application must be received prior to 6/30/2021 to be eligible for the sign-on bonus.  The sign-on bonus must be repaid if the employee resigns their position within the first 180 days of employment.


  • Analyze credit, income, assets and collateral for residential mortgage loans in accordance with Credit Union policies and secondary market and government loan program underwriting guidelines to ensure the creditworthiness of the members, and acceptability of the collateral. Disposition loans within Credit Union issued loan approval authority limits and recommend loan approval disposition for loan amounts in excess of authority limitations to the appropriate level of management. Document loan exceptions in accordance with policies, procedures and secondary market guidelines.
  • Ensure that loans are underwritten in accordance with real estate mortgage lending regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Notify Closing Attorneys once mortgage loan receives final underwriting approval and is clear to close.
  • Responsible for data integrity in all underwriting documents issued and verifies the accuracy of all calculations in the Real Estate Lending System.
  • Perform follow-up, compiles and authenticates the required documents needed to support all residential mortgage loans. Validate all conditions and requirements for loans approved by secondary market automated decision tool.
  • Handle member interactions and internal customers over the phone, in writing or in person in a timely, professional manner.
  • Maintain satisfactory level of technical knowledge and professional skill to keep up with current developments and changes in secondary market and government program underwriting guidelines, automated underwriting systems and state and federal mortgage lending regulations.
  • Adhere to all Credit Union policies, procedures, and regulatory agency requirements. Participate in all required and recommended training and development including, but not limited to, Bank Secrecy Act training (BSA) and demonstrate attained knowledge. Participate on Credit Union teams, projects and strategic initiatives when the opportunity arises. Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.

  • Responsible for regular and predictable attendance including punctuality.



  • Associate’s Degree or at least 2 years equivalent experience for each undergraduate year not completed; undergraduate degree cannot substitute for minimum number of years of experience required
  • Registration with the National Mortgage Licensing System and Registry (NMLS) required
  • FHA DE Underwriter required
  • Minimum 2 Years residential secondary market mortgage/FHA forward underwriting experience required
  • Minimum 2 Years automated residential mortgage processing system experience required
  • Minimum 2 Years conventional and government programs experience required
